Taika Waititi's Klara and the Sun, adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro's novel, stars Jenna Ortega as Klara, an Artificial Friend who watches the world from a shop window with endless curiosity before she's chosen by a young girl named Josie. Amy Adams plays Josie's mother, Chrissie, and Natasha Lyonne makes the most of a small role as the store manager. Robbie caught an early screening thanks to the Phoenix Film Society, and it was everything he'd hoped for.

The verdict: fantastic, moving, and far more complex than its simple premise suggests. Robbie calls it a perfect marriage of director, material, and leading actress, with Ortega giving a performance that is empathy incarnate and the whole thing wrapped in a gentle thread of faith that draws you closer. He also makes the case that this could be the film that wins back anyone who's grown tired of Waititi, and urges you to catch it on opening weekend.
